Revamp Your Space: The Art of Refurbishing a Piano

Ever thought of refurbishing a piano? If you’re like most, you know that purchasing a new high-end piano can break the bank. That’s why most of us don’t allow ourselves to dream of a piano in our entryways, living rooms, or dining rooms. But what if you could get the look for less by refurbishing a piano? It’s possible—I know because I’ve done it myself! Continue reading to find out how.

How I Started Designing Homes with Refurbished Items

When I first started as a homemaker, I knew nothing about design. After taking an interior design class, I discovered my passion. However, the struggle is real when it comes to the cost of furnishings and décor. High-quality, long-lasting décor requires a significant investment.

I’ve always worked hard, saved, and bargain-shopped for the things I have. Initially, I shopped in the clearance sections or even at the dollar store, slowly picking items for our home. Convincing my husband to buy home items was like hunting with the game warden—ladies, you know what I mean!

His cautious spending encouraged me to get creative and refurbish furniture and decor for our flips, remodels, and rentals, including damaged items.

The Start: A $300 Horace Waters Grand Piano

For example, we found a Horace Waters Grand Piano for just $300 during a visit to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. It was originally made in New York City over 100 years ago. Although it was in rough shape with a cracked soundboard, missing keys, and numerous dents, we saw its potential.

What to Expect When Refurbishing a Piano

Viewing the piano as a piece of art, I couldn’t wait to restore it and add a classy design touch. The rehab included using a Bondo Kit for filling dents, orbital sander, automotive paint at your local supply store, and a gloss sheen finish. I also added a Wrecked & Refined gold embellishment above the keys.

We initially hired a piano tuner who underestimated the piano's potential. Fortunately, our good friend Lyle saw its value and repaired the soundboard, making it fully functional. After the refurbishments, Lyle estimated the piano's value at over $40,000!

Cheap Piano Turned $40,000 Masterpiece

The monetary value wasn’t my primary concern. The piano now represents our home, family, and our journey. It’s far from perfect but has become a cherished part of our family’s legacy.

We Love Our “New” Piano

To this day, my boys play the piano while I cook, and I love sharing their performances on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. This refurbished piano has significantly increased their motivation to play, bringing me immense joy.

Your life passions may be one home décor piece away from a shocking investment. Look at what you love, and you might see the beauty in what others see as trash.
