I wish I had, but no better time than to do it now with my kiddos. My husband does not need to know about it until after it's set up. Just thinking of all the work to get it set up may overwhelm him. Yet I know he will Love It!

Nothing says summer like a barbecue party. Invest in a good quality grill and create a designated barbecue area with a prep station and seating. Consider adding an outdoor bar for serving drinks. To enhance the experience, set up a playlist with your favorite tunes and string up some lights for a festive atmosphere. Our deck overlooks the Missouri river belt and Cascade Mountains and the city of Great Falls, Montana. We use a smoker and a Blackstone with wheels that makes it easy to move to other locations that we can use in the driveway if the kids are riding bikes or the back on the deck to see mountain river and city views.

Make your garden a fun-filled playground with games and activities for all ages. Cornhole, bocce ball, giant Jenga, and croquet are classic choices that can entertain guests for hours. Our chickens run around near the garden as I tend to the watering or weeds. My husband helped me make an incognito chicken coop under our boys' playset, and the playset is a few feet away from the coop. We can sit and drink and converse as the older boys ride their go-cart in the field nearby as the little ones play on the swingset, and the little flock runs around chasing bugs. Use your imagination—your garden may look totally different, and that’s what we garden and flora lovers LOVE!

A sturdy dining table, comfortable chairs, and a shade structure like an umbrella or pergola can make dining outside a delightful experience. The pro is that it is easy to turn on and off. The wood fire pit offers that ambiance you cannot get with any other fire—the real thing. The cons of a fire pit are having a stockpile of wood and making sure the fire is completely out to prevent fire safety issues. The pro is the unmatched ambiance. Not recommended for vacation rentals.

Set the stage for fun with an outdoor sound system and a dance floor. Whether it's a small wooden platform or a cleared area on the lawn, a dance floor encourages guests to get up and move.
