Welcome to 2024, a year that brings a new era of home renovation trends, blending personal stories with innovative design ideas. As someone looking to revitalize their living space, you’re in for an exciting read. Let me take you through the top 5 trends, including a personal story that sparked my own passion for home design.

Wallpaper Wonders

My fascination with wallpaper began back in 2003-2004. As a student at the Aveda Institute Minneapolis, studying spa and massage therapy, I found myself drawn to the world of design and real estate. I remember visiting a model townhouse and being captivated by a bathroom wallpaper depicting Paris and the Eiffel Tower in black and white. Despite its small size, the space was elegant and breathtaking. This experience, at just 19, opened my eyes to the stunning possibilities of wallpaper. Fast forward to today, and I’m thrilled to have incorporated this element into my most recent design project. Wallpaper in 2024 isn’t just about covering walls; it’s a form of art, offering bold patterns, textured surfaces, and captivating scenes. There are also peel-and-stick options, so if you would like to change the design later, you can do so without the hassle of the fully committed textile wallpaper.

Smart Home Integration

The integration of technology in homes is more seamless than ever. Smart home features are not just about convenience; they reflect a lifestyle, offering control and efficiency at your fingertips. This trend continues to evolve, blending technology with design to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. This trend has been and will continue to evolve year after year. This past holiday, we were visiting family, and in the early morning, at the kitchen table, drinking coffee, the oven in my cousin’s kitchen popped on. I thought she left it on all night! She walked out in her pajamas and messy hair; we were twining! I let her know I turned it off, and she laughed. She then exclaimed; I turned it on from my phone in bed to warm it up for breakfast muffins. She has motivated me to get in gear. I have had a smart oven for the last two years and have never used it! This year, I am going to try it out. I like the thought of turning on the oven before breakfast, right after my morning workout.

Multifunctional Spaces

The importance of versatile living spaces has never been more of a trend. In my life, balancing a day job as an entrepreneur, I need spaces that serve multiple purposes. Today, home designs focus on rooms that can shift from a home office to a personal gym or a guest area, reflecting our multifaceted lives.

Natural Elements

In 2024, interior design trends will embrace the tranquil beauty of nature, focusing on natural elements and colors. There’s something timeless about natural elements in a home. Imagine integrating the soothing presence of plants throughout your home, creating an ambiance of freshness and tranquility. Read more on my plant design blog here.

This year, colors inspired by nature, such as the elegance of white or black granite with gold, brown, and black are in trend. Furniture made of camel-colored leather, indicating timeless elegance, creates a warm and inviting place to relax.

These colors echo the natural world with the deep, rich tones of ‘Cracked Pepper’ by Behr.

This home pictured above was one of my designs from 2021-2022. It is Behr’s color of the year for 2024. It is also one of our vacation rentals, which you can book here.

The vibrant earthy shade of ‘Persimmon’ by Sherwin Williams is an earthy, warm apricot color inspired by the fruit itself.

These colors are not just shades but experiences, reflecting the serenity and simplicity found in a peaceful walk in the woods or down beautiful vineyards filled with birds and sunlight. Light wooden cabinets paired with wooden floors create a harmonious contrast, further enhancing this organic aesthetic.

The trend extends to bathrooms, where the use of rocks, marble, granite, and stone creates a spa-like environment, evoking the calm and rejuvenation of a forest retreat. This year’s design trends are an invitation to bring the outdoors in, fostering a sense of peace and connection with nature in our everyday spaces.

Outdoor Living Spaces

Expanding living spaces to the outdoors has become a significant trend. Whether it’s a cozy patio, a lush garden, or an outdoor kitchen, these spaces offer a breath of fresh air and a connection to nature, vital for our well-being in today’s fast-paced and loud world.
